During the night of January 27, 2008, bricks found their way through the windows of the Elgin St. Royal Bank of Klanada in Ottawa. You may be wondering why...

This happened in opposition and resistance to the Corporate Circus known as the 2010 Winter Olympics. These actions are in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, the poor, and all those who are made to suffer in the name of "Security and Prosperity", the G-8, and the Olympics on stolen land. The ratification of the Security and Prosperity Partnership, the upcoming G-8 summit in Canada, and the Olympics are set to happen in the year 2010, and we thus declare war on all the year represents and all who sponsor it!!!

The CEO of RBC, Gordon M. Nixon, is a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the circus that proposed the SPP. RBC is also one of the main sponsors of the Olympics which have already displaced thousands. This involvement incriminates and directly links the corporation to the destruction wreaked upon the Earth and all who share it.

We say Fuck The Corporate Circus!

No Olympics on Stolen Land!

RIOT 2010!

And This Accomplishes......?

I'm curious as what is accomplished by this? Who is affected and how does it affect them?

How does it work towards achieving the stated goals of stopping the SPP, G8, the 2010 Winter Olympics and demonstrating solidarity with indigenous groups?

Good Point

I think Pretoria has a good point. I don't consider myself against anarchism really. But the whole point of anarchism isn't just random destruction. It is to MAKE a point ABOUT a particular issue. If you don't explain yourself to the general public, when you go around breaking windows without making a point of ensuring everyone possible knows why you did it, then breaking those windows served no purpose. I have read plenty of these anarchists reports about breaking things in order to represent solidarity with one or another group. However, none of the articles I have seen explained or attempted to explain the political implications of what they had done, or gone into any detail as to the desired effect--other than stating that it was for "solidarity" reasons, which means nothing without qualifying it. I'm not trying to say that your movement is undesirable, but it won't gain legitimacy in the eyes of the general public--and by consequence, won't achieve it's goals--unless you give people a reason to hear you out to begin with. And, yes I am aware that the anarchist movement is anti-systemic, but working outside of society does not mean you have to work outside the hearts and minds of those people you are trying to reach. That is where any movement must fight and win its battles in order to be successful.

a response to the comment

I don't think it's fair to say that an explanation hasn't been given. Providing an explanation seems to be exactly why this communique has been posted here. Perhaps it is oversimplified in regards to anti-SPP and anti-Olympic sentiment and reasoning. But, reading this article, i felt no confusion or questioning as to what the point of the attack was.

Attacking and causing economic and daily business disruptions to corporations that actively sponsor the 2010 olympics, i think should clearly indicate that further resistance and direct opposition will come. Solidarity takes many forms. Actions like this show those onto whom RBC-sponsored violence is inflicted (as a direct result of the 2010 olympics) that there have allies who are willing to take action and are ready to make these profiteering corporations pay for their greed and for the suffering that they cause. I would not consider this a random act of destruction.

Lastly, I think the point was missed of whose hearts and minds this action is trying to reach. The article portrays this as an action of solidarity, not of mass education of the general public.

Was there a more effective way to do it?
01.02.2008 - 05:03
Showing solidarity is all well and good, but is there perhaps a more effective way to do it? This action is primarily destructive and is only moderately disruptive. So again I question the methods and how effective they are in achieving a specified goal.

maybe

ideally the next step will be having a rogue trader or hacker get at rbc to a tune of $7billion or so

but we'll take what we can get, so keep it up!

Thank you Ottawa Anarchists
Thank you Ottawa Anarchists In my opinion...

I fail to see exactly how this act is destructive?
Some glass was broken.
That creates jobs.
The money spent goes directly to the repair work without leveraging interest from some poor slob that is guilty of not having money.

It also makes a clear statement that it is easy to take charge and act directly towards one's aims, without having to depend on media or the agreement of others who can't quite see what the issue is.

In the latter regard, this act is quite inspiring.
It tells us that we CAN act and it tells the oppressed indegenous peoples and the oppressed classes that brothers and sisters are in solidarity with you and are prepared to risk into order to oppose the oppressors.

This kind of act is real.
This is a refreshing glimpse into what it means to fight for justice rather than simply finding excuses to be neutralized.

Thank you Ottawa Anarchists.

Anti-2010 vandals hit Ottawa Royal Bank

Anti-2010 vandals hit Ottawa Royal Bank

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS
[Vancouver, Canada - Feb 6, 2008]

Anti-Olympics vandals have expanded their campaign against VANOC’s official bank and torch relay co-sponsor.

An anonymous message on no2010.com said “bricks found their way through the windows of the Elgin Street Royal Bank” in Ottawa on the night of Jan. 27. “The Olympics are set to happen in the year 2010, and we thus declare war on all the year represents and all who sponsor it!”

A Vancouver 2010 countdown clock was unveiled yesterday afternoon across from Parliament Hill.

RBC spokesman John Groves said the latest incidents were reported to police, but wouldn’t discuss what measures the bank employs to keep customers and staff safe.

The Ottawa attack came just over a month after four windows were smashed on Christmas Eve at a Cook Street Royal Bank in Victoria. Vancouver vandals broke windows Dec. 8 at Commercial and First and Dec. 9 at Hastings and Nanaimo. A no2010.com message about the latter attack, in the form of a phony news release, misappropriated Groves’ name.
